Gender Parity Study by Women in Research: What Do Moms Need to Know

Industry group Women in Research (WIRe) recently released the findings of the second wave of its study “Gender and Career Advancement in the Research Industry.” These findings were contrasted against the benchmark study done five years ago to illustrate what progress (or lack thereof) on gender parity in the workplace had occurred since 2013. While the data showed improvements in certain metrics, there were others where little progress had been made, including career barriers presented by parenthood, especially mothers.

It was this data point that Rebecca Brooks expanded on in an article she wrote for Greenbook. The article detailed specific ways that pregnancy and motherhood can hold women back in their career paths, while also providing a clear framework on how to address these persistent issues. She writes:

“There isn’t much we can do about biology. Women need the freedom, time, support, and resources for a healthy pregnancy, delivery and early childhood. As employers, we want to do everything we can to support that while still balancing the needs of the company and other employees. It can be a tricky thing to navigate, but being proactive, honest, and collaborative can remove most, if not all, of the factors that will stall your career.”
